Mary Ciucci Obituary

Mary Catherine Ciucci passed away peacefully at her home in Gaithersburg, MD on December 11, 2018 surrounded by members of her beloved family. She was born on July 29, 1930 in Dudley, daughter of the late William W. and Theresa Retta (McPhillips) Reed.

Mary Catherine was a member of St. Raphael Catholic Church, Rockville, Maryland. She graduated from Saxton Liberty High School Class of 1948. In 1952, she earned a Bachelor Degree in education from Shippensburg University. She then taught high school business education in Dundalk, Baltimore County, MD. After several years, she returned home and taught business education at Saxton Liberty High School.

Mary Catherine married John Ciucci on February 16, 1957 at the Immaculate Conception Church, Dudley, PA. and was his true soulmate for nearly 62 years of marriage. They were truly joyful and honored to receive the Holy Father’s Apostolic Blessing from Pope Francis on their Sixtieth Wedding Anniversary in February 2017. Mary proudly served her country by accompanying her husband, Air Force Colonel John Ciucci for 28 years. Duty assignments took her to Niagara Falls AFB, NY; Anderson AFB, Guam’ Olmstead AFB, PA; Wright-Patterson AFB, OH; Fuchu AFB, Tokyo, Japan; Maxwell AFB, Alabama; and Kelly AFB, Texas. During her time at Fuchu, Japan, Mary taught Air Force dependents for the Department of Defense in its overseas school system. Always interested in education, while at Wright Patterson AFB, she earned a Master Degree in Business Administration from Wright State University.

Mary is survived by her husband, retired Air Force Colonel John A. Ciucci and her three children: Marie D. Theall and her husband William of Fairborn, Ohio; John A. Ciucci Jr. and his wife Rebecca of Aspen Glen Colorado; and Stephen P. Ciucci and his wife Elizabeth of Sylvania, Ohio. Mary dearly loved her grandchildren: William, Theresa, Rebecca, Mary Ann, Reverend Father Daniel, Alexander, Gregory, Abbie and Dominic. She will affectionately be remembered by honoring and remembering her grandchildren and her five great grandchildren on their birthdays and other special days as they grew into adulthood.

Mary is survived by sisters and brothers Donald James Reed, Adelphi MD; Theresa Reed, Chevy Chase MD; Ada Johnson, Saxton, PA; Barbara Weiser, Gaithersburg MD; Genevieve Hess, Six Mile Run, PA; Robert Poe Reed and C. Daniel Reed, Dudley, PA. She was preceded in death by baby daughter, Caroline and by siblings William W. Reed, Jr, Helen Baughman, John C. Reed, Edward Reed and Diane Reed.

Mary Catherine is universally respected and admired for her steadfast, strong faith in God as exemplified in the way she practiced her faith and lived her life. Her spiritual advice was sought by young and old alike. Several commented that her demeanor had greater impact than her words. She sang in choirs of the many churches she attended as frequent moves were required as a member of an Air Force family. Likewise, she frequently taught religious education and catechism to young children at those churches. Mary was active with the Air Force Officer’s Wives’ Club which supported many civic and charitable endeavors such as the Air Force Aid Society that supported young troops and the well-known Fisher House.

When all is said and done, taking care of her Family was really Mary’s life work and it was done with genuine love and total dedication. Truly a world-class Mother.
