Sarah R. (Garner) Carberry

August 8, 1929 ~ October 22, 2017 (age 88) 88 Years Old


Sarah R. Carberry, 88, of James Creek, passed away on Sunday, October 22, 2017 at Geisinger Medical Center, Scranton, PA.  She was born on August 8, 1929 in Marklesburg, PA; a daughter of the late Samuel O. and Florence V. (Steinbach) Garner.  On May 1, 1965 at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Marklesburg, PA; she married Cletus D. Carberry, he preceded her in death on September 20, 1972.  She is survived by children Destarta Carberry married to Douglas Bush, Martinsburg, PA and Kerwin Carberry married to Sherry, Hopewell, PA; grandchildren, Bryan Bush and significant other Lori Zimmerman, Catherine Corcoran married to Michael, Christopher Bush, Tyler Dixon married to Briana, Sunny Dixon and Jenna Carberry; great-grandchildren Myha and Gage Dixon.

She was preceded in death by a sister Mary R. Garner.

Sarah was a graduate of Huntingdon High School, Class of 1946 and went on to attend the post-graduation Business program. She worked as a business manager at Garner Chevrolet and later Stoudnour Chevrolet for over fifty years until her retirement.

Mrs. Carberry was a member of St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church in Martinsburg, where she had participated in bible study. She was an avid quilter and a member of the Altoona Sewing Club, she enjoyed attending plays and being at her grandchildren’s sporting events.  Sarah was also a member of Lincoln Grange #914, F.C.R.V., where she served as treasurer and WELCA.  Sarah served as a volunteer for Thrivent Build with Habitat for Humanity and On Eagles Wings, where she helped with Bible Camps in Canada. She traveled to all fifty states, as well as Canada, Mexico, Egypt, China and Europe.  Her highlight in life was her reaffirmation of her baptism at the Jordan River.

Family and Friends may call at the St. Matthews Lutheran Church, 115 Penn Street, Martinsburg, PA 16662 on Thursday, October 26, 2017 from 9:00 A.M. until the hour of service at 11 A.M.

Funeral Service will be held at St. Matthews Lutheran Church at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, October 26, 2017 with Rev. Edward Harshbarger officiating.

Burial will be held at Old Stone Church Cemetery, James Creek, PA.
