A. Mary Elder, 90, of Homewood Retirement Center, Martinsburg, formerly of Valley Forge, PA; passed away on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at Homewood. She was born on September 28, 1926 in Defiance, Pennsylvania; a daughter of the late Edward Hanson and Lenore Vera (Mellott) Gaffious. In Saxton, Pennsylvania in 1949 at the Trinity United Church of Christ she was united in marriage to Kenneth R. Elder of Saxton, Pennsylvania. He preceded her in death in 1981.
She is survived by a son Kenneth “Skip” Elder married to Karen (Meck), Six Mile Run, PA; grandchildren Kenny Elder married to Jess (Carbaugh), Etters, PA and Kevin Elder, Six Mile Run, PA; two great grandsons Lucas and Noah Elder.
She was preceded in death by a daughter Cheryl Elder in 1997 and siblings Pauline Martin, Hazel Steele, Fred Graffious and Howard Graffious.
Mary was a graduate of Saxton Liberty High School Class of 1944 and later attended and graduated from Altoona Beauty School. Throughout her years she was a homemaker, later going to work as a bank teller and ultimately working for twenty one years at a Federal Agency until her retirement in 1994.
After retirement Mary spent many hours volunteering at the Valley Forge Visitors Center and a Hospice Volunteer in Montgomery County, PA.
Mary was an avid walker, jogger and rowing machine workout enthusiast up until the time of her illness.
At Mrs. Elders request there will be family and friends memorial service at the family convenience with a Private Burial to be held at St. Luke’s Cemetery, Saxton.
